MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting the United States for trade talks and a G20 ministerial meeting. The G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting is taking place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. Goyal’s U.S. schedule runs from September 29 through October 5. India’s Commerce Ministry said he will hold bilateral discussions with his American counterpart during the visit. The talks will cover the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and the proposed interim trade arrangement.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the Milwaukee gathering under the United States’ 2026 G20 presidency. The programme brings together trade ministers for sessions on several issues affecting global commerce. Topics include forced labour in supply chains and structural excess production capacity. Ministers will also discuss food-related trade restrictions and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle. Goyal will take part in the ministerial sessions while also holding meetings with officials from other participating economies.
India has said the G20 discussions will include the role of the multilateral trading system and the World Trade Organization. New Delhi has also highlighted development needs and policy space for emerging economies. Goyal’s bilateral meetings will cover trade and investment issues with participating countries. India said its engagement will also address opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups and smaller businesses. Those groups form part of the government’s wider trade agenda during the ministerial discussions in Milwaukee.
Bilateral trade agreement remains central
The India-U.S. discussions follow a joint framework announced in February 2026 for an interim reciprocal trade agreement. That framework sits within negotiations for a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement between the two countries. It set out tariff and market-access commitments for industrial and agricultural products. The framework also covered medical devices, information technology, standards and supply-chain cooperation. Both governments have continued negotiations on the interim arrangement while keeping the wider bilateral trade process active.
Goyal’s visit also includes meetings with companies, investors and business groups in Milwaukee and Chicago. His schedule covers manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail and technology. The minister will also meet startups and professional organisations during the U.S. trip. India’s Commerce Ministry said the programme includes engagements aimed at expanding commercial links and investment contacts. Goyal will also participate in scheduled community and commemorative events before concluding the visit on October 5.
G20 ministers examine global trade pressures
The Milwaukee programme includes a ministerial meeting of the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity on September 30. Trade ministers also have sessions scheduled across both days of the G20 gathering. The agenda includes discussions on production capacity and conditions affecting international supply chains. A visit to a Rockwell Automation facility forms part of the official programme. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has placed trade rules, food measures and labour concerns among the meeting’s main subjects.
India and the United States began negotiations for the wider bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The February 2026 framework created the basis for continued work on an interim deal. Goyal’s discussions with the U.S. side in Milwaukee form part of that process. The ministerial meeting concludes on October 1, while his broader U.S. programme continues for several more days.
